3rd Edition of the Victor Pinchuk Foundation’s $100,000 Future Generation Art Prize is Launched

On November 16, 2013 the Victor Pinchuk Foundation launched the 3rd Edition of the Victor Pinchuk Foundation’s Future Generation Art Prize at an event at London’s Serpentine Sackler Gallery. Artists Damien Hirst, Olafur Eliasson, Ziad Antar and Mircea Nicolae joined the PinchukArtCentre’s General Director, Eckhard Schneider and Serpentine Galleries Director, Julia Peyton-Jones and Co-Director, Hans Ulrich Obrist at the launch event.

Applications will be available online from 13 January 2014 to 12 April 2014 at the competition’s website: www.futuregenerationartprize.org

The shortlisted artists will be announced in June 2014 and will receive an exhibition at the PinchukArtCentre in Kiev, Ukraine from October 2014 to January 2015 and at the Venice Biennale in 2015. The winner will be announced in December 2014.

Launched by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation in 2009, the Prize is open to all artists up to the age of 35 with the aim of acknowledging and giving long-term support to a future generation of artists wherever they live and work. The Prize is unique because of its global reach and highly democratic form of application via the Internet.

The winner receives a total of $100,000: $60,000 as a cash award, and $40,000 towards the production of new work. An additional $20,000 is allocated to fund artist-in-residency programmes for up to five other prize-winners.

Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Andreas Gursky and Takashi Murakami are Mentor Artists for the Prize, providing advice and support for the winning artist.

A distinguished international Board oversees the Future Generation Art Prize. In addition to chairman Victor Pinchuk and the four Mentor Artists, the Board’s membership includes Eli Broad, Dakis Joannou, Elton John, Miuccia Prada and art museum directors Richard Armstrong (Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Museum), Glenn D. Lowry (The Museum of Modern Art) and Alfred Pacquement (Musée Nationale d’Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou).

Commenting on the launch of the 3rd Edition of the Prize, its founder Victor Pinchuk said: “With our prize, we do not want to reward the past, but inspire the future. We want to act as social investors in the arts. Our prize is the equivalent of an incubator for start up businesses. Everybody can apply, from everywhere. The best get advice and resources for new work and a chance to present themselves to the world. For me this is an exciting social investment, creating inspiration for societies”.

In 2010, Cinthia Marcelle (Brazil) was the first to win the Main Prize. Mircea Nicolae (Romania) was awarded the Special Prize according to the decision of the Jury.

In 2012, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye (UK) was the Main Prize Winner of the second edition of the Future Generation Art Prize. Jonathas de Andrade (Brazil), Micol Assaël (Italy), Ahmet Öğüt (Turkey), Rayyane Tabet (Lebanon), and Marwa Arsanios (Lebanon) shared the Special Prize.
