Lynette Yiadom-Boakye Wins Future Generation Art Prize

The Kiev-based Pinchuk Art Centre awarded British painter Lynette Yiadom-Boakye $100,000 as the winner of the Future Generation Art Prize at a ceremony last Friday.  Of 21 international finalists Yiadom-Boakye was chosen by a jury including such art-world luminaries as Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Massimiliano Gioni, and Hans Ulrich Obrist, among others.

Established by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation in December 2009, the award is granted to an artist under the age of 35 “to discover, recognize and give long-term support to a future generation of artists,” according to the prize’s website.

Yiadom-Boayke, who shows with Jack Shainman in New York, is known for her portraits of fictional black people. She has created a new series of works for the Pinchuk Art Centre, which will be on-view (along with work by all the finalists) at the center until January 6, 2013.
