PinchukArtCentre Presents Three Exhibitions Focused on Ukrainian Art

On February 27, PinchukArtCentre (Kyiv, Ukraine) will present three exhibitions with a focus on Ukrainian art and dealing simultaneously with the past, the present and the future of Ukraine: “Stone Hits Stone”, “Remember Yesterday” and “Tailings Dam”.

“Stone Hits Stone” by Nikita Kadan, made in the context of the PinchukArtCentre’s Research Platform. His first major solo exhibition in Ukraine presents both new produced and existing works reflecting on Ukrainian history, political violence, national historical heritage, avant-garde and Soviet utopia. This exhibition deals with present day challenges in its inextricable connection with the past, using history to enlighten the present and imagine the future. 

On the occasion of Nikita Kadan’s solo exhibition, the PinchukArtCentre will publish in early March 2021 an online book, “Stone Hits Stone”. The collected texts by Uilleam Blacker, Bjorn Geldhof, Kateryna Mischenko and Kateryna Yakovlenko will elaborate on history and memory, art interpretation of the past and violence as well as actualisation of the avant-garde legacy today. 

“Remember Yesterday”, a group exhibition of Ukrainian artists. This exhibition is the first in a new series of shows that draw from the PinchukArtCentre’s Ukrainian art collection. They will combine works from the collection, which has a main focus on the 90ties and early 2000, with new productions and or loans of recent work.

Remember Yesterday tells about the events that have impacted the development of Ukraine’s history and its society: from the Holodomor, through Perestroika, the 1990s, the Orange Revolution, the Revolution of Dignity, up until now. By engaging different generations of Ukrainian artists in dialogue, the exhibition shows how artists reflected on historic processes and how their works find their new relevance through the flow of time in a different historic moment. This dialogue is between works of artists who started their practice after 2004 – Julia Beliaeva, Sasha Kurmaz, Roman Khimey and Yarema Malashchuk, Anna Zviagintseva, Lesia Khomenko – and works from the PinchukArtCentre collection, created between the late 1980s and 2004: Sergey Bratkov, Oleg Holosiy, Pavlo Makov, Oleksandr Roytburd, Oleg Tistol, Vasyl Tsagolov.

“Tailings Dam”, a solo exhibition by Daniil Revkovskiy and Andriy Rachinskiy as a part of PAC UA. It is PinchukArtCentre’s programme aimed at commissioning new works by Ukrainian artists by investing in creation and providing curatorial and institutional support.

The new work by Daniil Revkovskiy and Andriy Rachinskiy takes the shape of a Museum of Human Civilisation which is established in the future after humans go extinct. The Museum is dedicated to the future archaeology of a tailings dam in Kryvyi Rih. A tailings dam is a system of special facilities for storing radioactive, toxic and other non-recyclable waste from mineral processing. The work touches upon the issue of man's responsibility for natural resources and chimeric forms that the imprint of human activity on Earth may acquire.

The exhibitions will be open from February 27 to August 15, 2021 in the PinchukArtCentre, Kyiv, Ukraine. Opening hours: Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 9 pm. Admission is free.
