FUTURE GENERATION ART PRIZE @ VENICE 2017. Collateral Event of the 57th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia

PinchukArtCentre and Victor Pinchuk Foundation will present an exhibition at the Biennale Arte 2017 of the work of 21 young artists from 16 different countries, shortlisted for the 4thedition of The Future Generation Art Prize, the global art prize for artists up to 35.

The exhibition is an official Collateral Event of the 57th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. It will be on view in the spectacular setting of the Palazzo Contarini Polignac from 12 May to 13 August 2017.

The Future Generation Art Prize is widely acknowledged as a springboard for emerging talent. Lynette Yiadom Boakye won the Prize in 2012, before going on to be shortlisted for the Turner Prize and have a highly successful solo show at the Serpentine Gallery in London. The winner of the first edition of the Prize, Cinthia Marcelle, will represent Brazil at the 57th International Art Exhibition.

The 21 artists on show this year in Venice, chosen from amongst 4,500 entries, include among others the winner of the $100,000 Future Generation Art Prize 2017, the South African artist Dineo Seshee Bopape, and the winner of the $20,000 Special Prize, Kenyan/British artist Phoebe Boswell.

In addition there will be new work by the other shortlisted artists who are: Njideka Akunyili Crosby (Nigeria / United States), Iván Argote (Colombia / France), Firelei Báez (Dominican Republic / United States), Vivian Caccuri (Brazil), Sol Calero (Venezuela / Germany), Asli Çavuşoğlu (Turkey), Vajiko Chachkhiani (Georgia / Germany), Carla Chaim (Brazil), Christian Falsnaes (Denmark / Germany), EJ Hill (United States), Andy Holden (United Kingdom), Li Ran (China), Ibrahim Mahama (Ghana), Rebecca Moss (United Kingdom), Sasha Pirogova (Russia), Kameelah Janan Rasheed (United States), Martine Syms (United States), Kemang Wa Lehulere (South Africa), Open Group (Ukraine).

The Future Generation Art Prize @ Venice 2017 exhibition is curated by Björn Geldhof, Artistic Director of the PinchukArtCentre and invited curator Anna Smolak. The winners were announced at an exhibition at PinchukArtCentre, which opened in February 2017, chosen from the shortlist by a distinguished international jury consisting of Nicholas Baume, Director and Chief Curator, Public Art Fund, New York; Iwona Blazwick, Director, Whitechapel Art Gallery, London; Björn Geldhof, Artistic Director, PinchukArtCentre, Kyiv and YARAT, Baku; Mami Kataoka, Chief Curator, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo and Curator, 21st Biennale of Sydney 2018; Koyo Kouoh, Founding Artistic Director, Raw Material Company, Dakar; Jochen Volz, curator of the 32nd São Paulo Biennial and General director of Pinacoteca, São Paulo, Brazil; Jérôme Sans, Co-Founder, Palais de Tokyo Paris and Artistic Director, Perfect Crossovers, Paris-Beijing.

Launched in 2009 by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation, the Future Generation Art Prize is a worldwide contemporary art prize, created to discover, recognise and give long-term support to a future generation of artists. It is important contribution to the open participation of younger artists in the dynamic cultural development of societies in global transition.

A distinguished Board oversees the Future Generation Art Prize. With Victor Pinchuk as its Chairman, the Board includes four patron artists Andreas Gursky, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami, the collectors Eli Broad, Dakis Joannou, Elton John, Miuccia Prada and museum directors Richard Armstrong (Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Museum, Glenn D. Lowry (The Museum of Modern Art) and Alfred Pacquement (former, Musée Nationale d'Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou).
