Republican Perinatal Center of Crimea is the first in Ukraine to introduce neonatal surgery

The Republican Perinatal Center of Crimea, which was established in the framework of the National Project "New Life" in partnership with the Victor Pinchuk Foundation at the Crimean Clinical Territorial Medical Association "University Hospital", becomes the first institution in Ukraine to introduce surgical treatment of congenital anomalies of newborns.

A 6-bed neonatal intensive care unit operates in Simferopol as part of the perinatal center opened in December 2012. The Victor Pinchuk Foundation has fully equipped it with high-tech medical equipment which now allows doctors to provide a full range of emergency newborn care.

Currently the perinatal center is the only one in Ukraine that actively introduces emergency surgery without transporting newborn babies to other hospitals. In the neonatal intensive care unit doctors have successfully conducted 12 neurosurgeries and 5 cardiac surgeries. Surgical treatment of congenital anomalies in the early days after birth significantly increases the chances of children to have healthy and full life.

According to the doctors, for the first 6 months the perinatal center intensive care unit received 186 premature babies, including 76 infants weighing up to 1500g. The smallest child who was successfully treated and cared for by the centre’s medical staff was born with a weight of only 680g and had to be connected to a lung ventilation machine for 1.5 months. The child has now been discharged from hospital and is developing normally.

In 2011 the Victor Pinchuk Foundation became a partner of the national project “New Life” initiated by the President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, and made a commitment to supply intensive care units for newborns with modern medical equipment, allocating for this purpose UAH 100 million.
