World’s leading neonatologists have shared their experience with Ukrainian doctors at 12th conference of Victor Pinchuk Foundation’s Cradles of Hope programme

On 3 December 2020, the Victor Pinchuk Foundation's Cradles of Hope programme hosted its 12th conference themed “Specific Matters of Neonatal Intensive Care” in Kyiv. The event, held online for the first time this year, introduced Ukrainian neonatologists to new trends in intensive care for newborns, including preterm infants.

For 14 years now, the Cradles of Hope project, in addition to providing state-of-the-art medical equipment to neonatal centres, has been making systematic efforts to train doctors and nurses in the world's infant nursing methods. As part of this project, the Foundation promotes introduction of new technologies and practices on the path to reforming maternal and child care in Ukraine.

Svitlana Havrylenko, the Victor Pinchuk Foundation’s Cradles of Hope programme director: “We train our doctors and nurses in innovative preterm infant nursing techniques, as supporting professionals with knowledge and information that is relevant to them is extremely important, especially in the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are happy that over the time of the programme existence, more than 55 000 babies have been saved.”

This year's speakers included Dr. Shad Husain, Homerton University Hospital, London, UK; Dr. Paul Fleming, Homerton University Hospital, London, UK; Dr. Morten Breindahl, Rigshospitalet, Denmark; Prof. Avroy A. Fanaroff, Case Western Reserve University and Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, US.

Tetiana Znamenska, president of Ukraine’s Neonatologist Association: “Over the years the Victor Pinchuk Foundation’s Cradles of Hope conferences have been held, we have learnt a large number of newest techniques that we successfully apply in Ukraine. Today, due to the pandemic, there are many questions on how care has to be provided to a mother and a baby with CODID-19. We have our acquired knowledge. Doctors from other countries have their acquired knowledge. To us, it is very important to find the golden mean, enabling us to avoid harming infants.”

A number of widespread preterm infant diseases has been covered during the conference, namely, retinopathy and neurosal enterocolitis, and their prevention and treatment. A special focus was given to operation of neonatal intensive care units under the COVID-19 pandemic. About 1000 medical workers took part in the event.
