Germany offers medical assistance to injured on the Maidan with support of Victor and Elena Pinchuk
24 Ukrainians who were seriously injured during the acts of violence on the Maidan are to undergo medical treatment in Germany. On Wednesday a special Bundeswehr airplane will transport the wounded from Kyiv to Berlin, and from there they will be transported for further treatment and rehabilitation in medical facilities across Germany, including Berlin-based Charité clinic.
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine turned to Germany with a request to accept seriously injured patients who would have good chances to receive high-quality treatment in the specialized German hospitals. Among the injured are both protestors and riot policemen, who mostly suffered severe gunshot wounds.
The German Federal Government has provided funds for treatment of the injured in Germany. Also, an essential part of the costs is taken on by the Elena and Victor Pinchuk to ensure treatment and rehabilitation of the patients. "It’s a great honor to assist the injured compatriots", they commented.
Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier: “Events of February 18-20 on the Maidan were tragic. Nearly a hundred people lost their lives, nearly a thousand people were seriously injured when the Ukrainians were shooting at each other in Kyiv. What this means for the future of Ukraine, we don’t know yet. But we want to help the wounded to get back to a good and, if possible, to a normal life.”
Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen: "It goes without saying that Germany demonstrates solidarity with the Ukrainian people and helps wounded on the Maidan. Bundeswehr medical teams are already in Kyiv and prepare everything. Bundeswehr offers not only its excellent hospitals, but also cares about transportation and, in extreme cases, we are able to evacuate critically injured on our MEDEVAC flying intensive care station within couple of hours".
