ARTnews: Victor Pinchuk among the world's 200 top art collectors for the fifth time

Victor-Pinchuk-in-front-of-D-Hirst-paintingAccording to “The ARTnews 200 Top Collectors” published in July, Ukrainian businessman, public figure and founder of the PinchukArtCentre Victor Pinchuk has been included in the list for the fifth consecutive year.

The ARTnews 200 list – which includes notable names in fashion, entertainment, finance, technology, media, and real estate – is compiled by ARTnews correspondents in 22 countries who interviewed collectors, dealers, auctioneers, museum directors, curators and consultants.

According to the 22nd annual ARTnews 200, the Top Ten are: Hélène and Bernard Arnault; Debra and Leon Black; Edythe L. and Eli Broad; Pierre Chen; Alexandra and Steven A. Cohen; Jo Carole and Ronald S. Lauder; Dimitri Mavromatis; Philip S. Niarchos; François Pinault; Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Others on the list: jeweler Laurence Graff; venture capitalists and philanthropists Barbara and John Vogelstein; Tadashi Yanai, owner of the global apparel retailer Uniqlo; François Pinault, who runs the luxury goods company PPR; AllianceBernstein chairman Peter Kraus and his wife, Jill; Walmart heiress Alice Walton; Russian businessman Roman Abramovich and founder of the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture Dasha.

Milton Esterow, Editor and Publisher of ARTnews, said that the consensus among dealers and auctioneers is that “increasingly the art market is a global market. New collectors keep emerging from many countries, including China, Indonesia, India, Russia and South America. But experts say that Americans are still driving the market in a huge way.”

Contemporary art continues to be the most popular kind collected by the ARTnews 200: 84% collect contemporary art; 37% collect modern art; 14% collect Postwar art/Abstract Expressionism (up from 10% last year); 8% collect Impressionist/Post-Impressionist art; 8% collect Old Masters. 6% collect Decorative arts (furniture, design, textiles, ceramics). In addition, 5% collect African/tribal/primitive art. American art is collected by 11%; 6% 2collect Asian art; 6% collect Austrian/German art; and 4% collect Latin American art.
