Victor Pinchuk Foundation to donate $ 10 million for acquisition of equipment for the “Children's hospital of the future”
July 24, 2007, during the briefing summarizing the results of the meeting of the Supervisory Board of the Children's Hospital of the Future of International Charitable Foundation "Ukraine 3000" (presided by Mrs. Kateryna Yushchenko) the President of Victor Pinchuk Foundation Mr. Thomas Eymond-Laritaz declared $10 million donation for construction of the children's hospital of future.
The funds allocated by Victor Pinchuk Foundation for the Children's Hospital of the Future allow to equip the radiological department of hospital with ultramodern equipment. The equipment allows treating oncologic diseases of the children of different age according to the world standards.
The complex consisting of the linear accelerators of high and low power, will become the basis of future radiological department. Linear accelerators will allow to perform efficient non-surgical treatment of deeply located tumors, and the availability of special simulator will allow to carry out the precise preradial typometric preparation of patients and accurately reproduce the session of irradiation on the linear accelerator.
The linear accelerators of last generation are medical apparatuses, whose therapeutic features exceed the features of "Gamma-knife" type facilities, which was preliminarily planned to be purchased for the funds of Victor Pinchuk Foundation.
The medical equipment of this class and quality will, for the first time, give to sick Ukrainian children a unique chance to obtain free medical treatment in Ukraine, because, until now, this therapy can be used only abroad, and for this each patient should have sufficient amount of state or sponsor money. In accordance with concluded agreement the Foundation "Ukraine 3000" plans to ensure the possibility of treating in Ukraine all children, who need this assistance, already in 2009.
Victor Pinchuk Foundation attaches great significance to the project "Children's hospital of future", because unsatisfactory equipping of oncologic institutions with diagnostic and treating technique is a vital problem in the field of oncologic aid.
Today more than 90 percent of the equipment of Ukrainian hospitals needs major repair or replacement. Radiological apparatuses are in service for more than 40 years, their service life has been exhausted, and equipment currently in operation is on the verge of its service life. Highly efficient modern linear accelerators, gamma-therapy apparatuses, tomographs are absent at all in many regions.
The establishment of the radiological department of the "Children's hospital of future" will allow not only to save much more children's lives than this is done today. The performance of modern linear accelerators will provide for 15 to 50 sick children per day with required treatment.
