The PinchukArtCentre presents the first solo exhibition by Cinthia Marcelle, the Main Prize Winner of the Future Generation Art Prize 2010

The PinchukArtCentre presents the first solo exhibition by Brazilian artist Cinthia Marcelle, the Main Prize Winner of the Future Generation Art Prize 2010, outside of Brasil. The show entitled See to be seen includes a new large-scale installation and a new specially produced film. The exhibition is located on the 2nd floor of the art centre and will last from October 29, 2011 to January 8, 2012.

The monumental installation See to be seen has beencreated with the support of PinchukArtCentre. Marcelle developed in this installation a carpet that covers a hidden landscape of dust. This new work is a topological research conducted by an appropriation of ordinary things and industrial materials. The work starts from the simple gesture: hiding the dust under the carpet. It serves as a metaphor for hiding our mistakes, our dirt from the eye. Marcelle’s landscape is a reflection on the continuous historical repetition of this gesture and represents centuries of dust hidden under the carpet.

Talking about the work, Cinthia Marcelle says: “The landscapes in my work, more recently, start to present the idea of ruin, the accumulation of the residues, scraps. They are landscapes of the culture, its frontiers and its barriers – or since they are landscapes, this starts to be a frontier between nature and culture. The accumulation can often be seen as a sign of the time.”

The Century, the second work, is a project made in collaboration with the filmmaker Tiago Mata Machado. Itis a film about the joy of destruction and rupture. “For me, The Century is an image of an epoch being dismantled, an image of its ruin. In this dialogue confrontation with Tiago, I usually test the limits of the disorder of creation, our works are less controlled – it’s the freedom of working in partnership”, says Cinthia Marcelle.

Cinthia Marcelle is the winner of the first Future Generation Art Prize 2010. She received $60,000 in cash and $40,000 for investing in the production of new work. Additionally, Marcelle’s art works were presented as a part of “The Future Generation Art Prize @ Venice” exhibition - an official Collateral Event of the 54th International Art Exhibition - la Biennale di Venezia. The project showcased 19 independent artists’ statements of the artists shortlisted for the Future Generation Art Prize 2010.
