Tony Blair, Bill Clinton and Muhammad Yunus will discuss philanthropy problems at the 2nd Davos Philanthropic Roundtable hosted by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation

On 29 January 2009 during the World Economic Forum the Victor Pinchuk Foundation will host the 2nd Davos Philanthropic Roundtable entitled "From Philanthrocapitalism to Philanthrocrisis".

The key speakers at the event will be the dignitaries, who have significantly contributed to the development of a new model of philanthropy: Bill Clinton (William "Bill" Jefferson Clinton), 42nd President of the United States; Tony Blair (Anthony Charles  Lynton  Blair), former Prime-Minister Of Great Britain; Sir  Richard  Branson (Sir Richard Charles  Nicholas  Branson), businessman and philanthropist; Muhammad  Yunus, Laureate of 2006 Nobel Peace Prize; Jet Li, famous actor and founder of a charity fund and also Victor Pinchuk, the Roundtable organiser, public leader and businessman. Matthew Bishop, Chief Business Editor of The Economist and co-author of the book "Philanthrocapitalism: How the Rich Can Save the World" will act as a moderator of the discussion.

The main topic of the Roundtable will be the effects of the global financial crisis on the philanthropic activity and prospects for philanthropy development. The participants will hold discussions as to what extend the current situation in financial and economic sectors will reflect on the scale of the charity foundations activity, whether we should expect a significant reduction of charity contributions globally and what social after-effects can be expected as a result of such reduction. The Roundtable debate will keep its focus on the philanthropy's ability to remain in future one of the key factors of social progress, filling main social needs and requirements of people, and also on the new potential philanthropic models that might emerge after the economy has recovered.

Nearly 200 people, including the World Economic Forum participants, representatives of commercial, charitable and non-government organisations and mass media, will take part in the Roundtable discussions.


Background:

The 1st Philanthropic Roundtable organised by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation was held in Davos during the World Economic Forum 2008. The main speakers at the time were the founder of the Open Society Foundation George Soros, Chief Editor of The Economist Mathew Bishop, President of the Global Health Program of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Dr. Tadataka Yamada, Chairwoman of the Supervisory Council of the Ukraine -3000 Foundation Kateryna Yuschenko and Chief Executive Officer of the Clinton Global Initiative Robert Harrison. The role of the discussions moderator was undertaken by President of Aspen Institute Walter Isaacson, former Chairman and CEO of CNN.

The Victor Pinchuk Foundation Provided Assistance to the “Cradles of Hope” Center in Uzhhorod

The Victor Pinchuk Foundation paid for the repair of medical equipment and purchased spare parts for its partner center, “Cradles of Hope,” which operates in the neonatal intensive care unit of the perinatal center at the Uzhhorod City Multidisciplinary Clinical Hospital, for a total cost of 230,000 hryvnias.

The 17th mental health center of the RETURNING network has started operating on the basis of a medical institution of the National Guard of Ukraine

Victor and Olena Pinchuk continue to expand the all-Ukrainian network of mental health centers RETURNING (ukr. ПОВЕРНЕННЯ). The new RETURNING center, created jointly with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and the National Guard of Ukraine on the basis of one of the departmental medical institutions, became the 17th in the network.



The Victor Pinchuk Foundation Provided Assistance to the “Cradles of Hope” Center in Vinnytsia

As part of its technical support for “Cradles of Hope” partner centers, the Victor Pinchuk Foundation covered the cost of repairing three mechanical ventilators, an open resuscitation system, and purchased consumables to ensure the uninterrupted operation of medical equipment in the neonatal intensive care unit of the regional perinatal center at the M.I. Pirogov Vinnytsia Regional Clinical Hospital. The total cost of the repairs and materials amounted to 130,000.00 UAH.
