"Spell Your Name" documentary shown at the University of Maryland
On October 25 2007, "Spell Your Name" documentary co-produced by Steven Spielberg and Victor Pinchuk was shown at the Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Centre for Jewish Studies, University of Maryland. In fact, the event organized by the Centre has combined several events.
On October 25, 2007 one of the best-known Russian poets, Yevgeny Yevtushenko read his old and new works in Russian and English, and "Spell Your Name" documentary was shown. On October 26 there was held a conference 'Remembering Babi Yar', and a concert played by the UM Symphony Orchestra performing Shostakovich's powerful symphony "Babi Yar". On October 27, "Stalin's Funeral" film was shown. It was written and directed by Yevgeny Yevtushenko. Director of "Spell Your Name" documentary, Serhiy Bukovsky and associate producer thereof, a spouse of Serhiy Bukovsky, Viktoria Bondar were present during the show.
In 2006, on the basis of materials by the USC Shoah Foundation Institute for Video history and under the support of the Victor Pinchuk Foundation there was produced a documentary about the Holocaust in Ukraine whereof co-producers were Victor Pinchuk and Steven Spielberg. The Premiere of this film took place in Kyiv on October 2006 in presence of Mr. Spielberg. Documentary, directed by Serhiy Bukovsky, is based on testimonies of Jews surviving the Nazi atrocity and those who rescued the Jews at death peril.
The Victor Pinchuk Foundation in cooperation with the USC Shoah Foundation Institute for Video history and education of the South California University implements "Towards a memory", an educational program about Holocaust in Ukraine. Aim of the program is to help school teachers in giving the Holocaust topic to students. Program consists of two parts: developing of the guidebook and training teachers on how to use the guidebook. Each chapter of the guidebook is illustrated by a part of "Spell your name" documentary. As expected, guidebook will be used not only by teachers of history but also by teachers of social science, law, ethics, philosophy and literature.
