PinchukArtCentre to Hold Literature Programme “Generations Borderline: 1985-2004”
In August, Tuesdays and Thursdays, the PinchukArtCentre invites to a series of lectures, discussions and readings in the framework of the literature programme “Generations borderline: 1985-2004”, which, similar to the exhibition “Borderline” is devoted to the period of Ukrainian independence formation and significant works of the national writers of 1985-2004.
Lectures of the summer literature programme will begin with an opening lecture on August 4 entitled “80s Generation: from Underground to Mainstream” by writer, publicist, President of the Ukrainian Center of the International PEN Club Mykola Ryabchuk. Subsequent lectures in the PinchukArtCentre will be given by writer and critic Mykhailo Brynykh, literature and cultural studies expert Tamara Gundorova and writer Oksana Zabuzhko.
Traditional discussions and readings will take place every Thursday at the PinchukArtCentre. In particular, on August 6, writers and representatives of different literary generations will discuss the achievements and losses of Ukrainian 90s and the first decade in the history of modern Ukrainian literature. Among the panellists there will be Yury Shcherbakov, Ludmila Taran, Pavlo Volvach, Olena Styazhkina and Anton Kushnir.
On August 13, as part of the readings “Dialogue of writer generations” young Ukrainian authors will read favourite excerpts from the iconic Ukrainian novels of 1985-2004: Oleksiy Chupa will present “The Moskoviad” by Y. Andrukhovych, Marysia Nikitiuk will read abstracts of “Stalinka” by O. Ulianenko, Iryna Tsilyk — “Fieldwork in Ukrainian Sex” by O. Zabuzhko, Pavlo Korobchuk — novel “Wozzeck” by Y. Izdryk, Ksenia Kharchenko — “The UnSimple” by T. Prokhasko and Karina Tumayeva — “Depeche Mode” by S. Zhadan.
The period explored by the curators of the PinchukArtCentre’s exhibition “Boarderline” coincides with the emergence of the major poetry collections of Yuri Andrukhovych. Therefore, on August 20 there will take place a poetic evening of the Patriarch of poetic group “Bu-Ba-Bu” (ukr. Stands for 'burlesque, side-show, buffoonery') entitled «From “The Sky and Squares” to the “Songs for the Dead Rooster.”»
The programme will end with the dialogue between writer Larysa Denysenko and artist Vlada Ralko on the nature of authors’ and artists’ diaries, and also a meeting with actress Halyna Stefanova and literary critic, film director Roman Veretelnik. Halyna Stefanova played in one-woman shows “Fieldwork in Ukrainian Sex" (2003) and «Variations for Shakuhachi, TV and Voice» (2011) based on the works of Oksana Zabuzhko. As part of the literature programme the PinchukArtCentre will also host a performance based on the popular plays followed by a discussion.

“Borderline. Ukrainian Art 1985–2004” is a large scale group show of Ukrainian artists exploring development of the Ukrainian contemporary art from early 1980s till 2004 when the Orange Revolution had happened in the country. The exhibition investigates driving forces of socially and politically engaged art starting from “pre-perestroika” time. It presents more than 40 major group works by prominent Ukrainian artists and art groups whose practice has been defined during and shortly after the collapse of the USSR.
